Netflix knows all: Binge Watchers Anonymous #StreamTeam

We all have our television…who am I kidding…Netflix watching trends. If you’re like me and millions of others, chances are you  cut the cord a long time ago, the cable cord that is. We exclusively rely on Netflix and the occasional DVD for our entertainment. Apparently, according to newly released data, I am not alone when it comes to my binge-a-holic tendencies [wiping away awkward sweat from my forehead].

In fact, Netflix released data proving that TV and movies are better together – a new viewing trend has emerged with more than 30 million users around the world weaving films into their binge routines.

According to research, after finishing a series, a majority of Netflix members (59%) take a pause, usually lasting three days, before committing to a new show. During that break, more than half (61%) watch a movie to keep the binge feeling alive. I kid you not. I can attest to this trend. It’s *almost* as if they’re watching me watch it.

When looking into what movies most often followed some of today’s top series, interesting pairings emerged amongst Canadian users.

Post Narcos, users moved onto Scarface, Cartel Land and Narco Cultura to get their fix.

Suits fans dealt with their Harvey Specter deficiency by watching Now You See Me and Ocean’s Twelve.

After watching House of Cards, some members moved to Beasts of No Nation while others needed a break from ruthless leaders with Ant-Man.

Vince Gilligan’s cinematic nod to Tarantino in Breaking Bad didn’t go unnoticed with watchers moving on to Pulp Fiction after Mr. White bid his final adieu. Meanwhile, fast talking fans of Gilmore Girls keep their pop culture references fresh with Clueless and Mean Girls.

Members also turned to documentary films to fuel their post-binge craving. After watching Narcos, viewers fueled their cartel curiosity with Cartel Land and Narco Cultura. Watchers of Marvel’s Luke Cage continued the pursuit for justice with 13TH while fans of Black Mirror saw the real consequences of technology in Hot Girls Wanted. Interestingly, while most viewers of BoJack Horseman trotted to stand-up specials, some took a break from the path of self-destruction with a little self-help from Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru.

An exception to this pattern – comedy. When watchers are in the mood for a different entertainment rhythm they tend to choose comedy as their series pair. This stands especially true for horror series where viewers of the frightful most often turn to comedy before moving to the next nail-biter. For instance, fans of Stranger Things turned to Ghostbusters to help l’eggo of the thrills while watchers of Scream traded serial killers for serial laughs with Ride Along.

According to the research, here are some popular series-movie pairings:

Series Movie Pairings
Bates Motel 22 Jump Street, Dirty Grandpa
Black Mirror Inception, Hot Girls Wanted
BoJack Horseman Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, Ali Wong: Baby Cobra
