This summer get out and get active with @CanadianTire #WannaPlayChat {Twitter Party June 16th 8-9pm}

Growing up, warm weather would mean riding bikes, playing street hockey, baseball with the neighbourhood kids and basketball with my brother until the sun went down. We didn’t try to be active, we just were.

The 2015 ParticipACTION report card was recently released and indicates that a fear of “risky” outdoor play leads to parents over-supervising kids or keeping them indoors. This limits their opportunities for physical activity, endangering their long-term health.

While keeping children indoors may seem like a safer alternative, sedentary behaviour and inactivity can increase the odds of developing chronic diseases, including heart disease, type-2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and mental health problems.

Staying active with our kids has always been really important to us. During the winter we take our kids skating, skiing, tobogganing and even just out to roll around in the snow. During the spring we love playing street hockey and in the summer and fall we play a LOT of soccer, basketball, swim, more street hockey and volleyball when we get the chance.

As parents I think we all struggle with the battle against electronics; whether it’s tablets, phones, video games, computers or the television but limiting daily screen time and encouraging kids to play outdoors can make a huge difference for their health.

  1. I will definitely try to make it to that party. It sounds like it’s going to be a really good one with some awesome prizes!

  2. We are an outdoor lover family so we always do stuff durig the warm weather. Whether it’s a plain walk around the block, playing football in the field, or even gardening.

  3. It is so important for kids to get out and play! Now people are getting in trouble with the law for actually letting their kids be outside and run around the neighborhood…insane! I was all over town when I was a kid!

  4. We love spending time outdoors. I think outdoor play is so important, that is for sure. I will try to make it out to the party too!

  5. Yes! When I was a child, we didn’t try to be active, or schedule time for it. It was just something we did. It makes me sad that I have to schedule active time with my children.

  6. I wish I could go back and be a child again. I miss all the times outside in the summer. Not worrying about any social media, or anything like that. I miss being able to play out in the sprinklers, ride bikes, playground & all!
    Oh & what great prizes!

  7. I like this activity. My family loves physical activities too and this is a great thing to do with the family.

  8. I really wish that my kids could spend more time outdoors. It is very hot in Texas during the summer so they don’t always get to get outside to play. I try to take them swimming as much as possible since it is a great way to cool off, plus it is excellent exercise too.

  9. I love Hayley Wickenheiser! We used to live in Canada, and I was her fan! Too bad I just read your post now about the party, I would have participated just to chat with Hayley.

  10. It’s hard because by telling kids to get outside, what we’re really saying is parents need to get outside and play too. Adults lead far too sedentary lifestyles and since kids can’t really play alone these days, it’s the adults that are lazy and need to get outside every single day.

  11. My kids are always outside playing. It’s important for them to get fresh air, sunlight, and get that physical activity in.

  12. What A great Twitter party! I don’t live in Canada but I did spend a whole summer there afew years back and I unfortunately had a tire issue and Canadian Tire took care of it for me! They did a great job 🙂

  13. This is a great campaign and I do believe it is so important for children to get outdoors to play. Being inside can cause so many more problems than them being outside. Thanks for sharing it truly is an amazing campaign.
