International Women’s Day made me emotional this year. It was a reminder of how far we have come as a gender but how much more work we still have to do. I recently blogged about how I use Netflix as part of my self care regiment. The reality though is that when I do watch Netflix (hey self care is important right?!) I opt for shows with a strong female lead.
Some of my faves are:
The Good Wife
Jane the Virgin
I love that the women in these shows are unapologetically themselves. They are fierce, strong, independent and proud. Being a feminist doesn’t mean being strong all the time and never batting an eyelash when things get tough. It does mean persevering through the hard times and never apologizing for who you are.
I’ve come to embrace Netflix as part of my self care regimen. Last weekend I delivered a keynote address at a Women in Leadership conference entitled “Trailblazers Testimonies” held at McGill University. At the end of the conference we had an all panelists Q&A session. One of the attendees (all of whom were McGill University students) asked about mental health and wellness and how we take care of ourselves. The two panelists that spoke before me gave great suggestions about exercising and meditation. When it came my turn to respond, I told them I would get real. Mental health and wellness is extremely important. I responded that I have started working out regularly and I meditate regularly as well but sometimes after a particularly hard day, all I want to do is curl up on the couch and watch Netflix. When I do, my strong female lead shows are there to keep me company.
