That Time I Met Prime Minister @justintrudeau #CdnPoli #LPC

This post is not political, it is simply all about politics. There is an important difference to be made. It is about watching a dream come to fruition. It is about connecting your past with your present. It is about gushing like a school girl. Have I piqued your interest? Then read on.

I have shared the story of my family’s immigration to Canada in the early 1970’s on the blog before. My father, of Pakistani origin, lived in Frankfurt, Germany when he saw the late Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau on television, proclaim the ever famous line “Just watch me!” during the October crisis of 1970. That speech and that moment defined the future of my family as it inspired him to immigrate to Canada where he arrived in Montreal on Christmas day of 1974 with his new wife and infant child. My parents raised my siblings and I to be fiercely proud Canadians, Muslims and Quebecers.

I have written about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before. I did not do so as a staunch Liberal (because that would be beside the point) but rather as a humanitarian and as a Canadian Muslim woman thankful for his inclusive politics, pro-feminism and his support of the cultural diversity that makes our country flourish.

What you might not know about me is that it was always a dream of mine to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This dream did not just grow when he took office but rather when I watched him deliver the eulogy at his father’s funeral in 2000. I wanted to meet him in person and tell him that his father was the reason my father had chosen to move to this beautiful country. His father was my dad’s hero and for that I was ever grateful. In the recent past my desire to meet the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau has flourished as I have watched him unite our country, its diverse community and its people.

We all have a right to our political views and if you do not agree with mine, that is alright. I still respect your right to disagree, but recently…..I got to MEET Justin. Trudeau. Prime. Minister. Justin. Trudeau. It HAPPENED. I walked out of the event and was floating on cloud nine. No alcohol was consumed 🙂 So I took out my phone and recorded the following video. It’s a very un-Fariha like video to share but it expresses my sentiments precisely so here you go.

While the meeting was brief, I am so thankful to have had that experience. It is one that I will cherish for a very long time.
