The Great Taste of California Cling Peaches

One of my favourite summer flavours is the ripe, juicy taste of peaches. It’s a childhood memory I associate with playing with friends, laughing in the sun and sitting down to a family meal with a big bowl of fruit. I love the sweet juice that oozes out of a ripe peach as it drips down of the side of your mouth when you take a bite.

When Ms. B was less than a year old, I still remember sitting down on the cool kitchen floor with her on a hot summer day with a big bowl of peaches. She’d hold them in her hands and squeal as the juice would spurt out with every bite. To this day she loves the taste whether it’s on its own or mixed in with other flavours.

I crave that flavour year round and am so glad to have discovered  California cling peaches that are picked and packed in their own juices, usually within 24 hours to ensure they retain their appearance, texture, flavour and nutritional content.

With the cost of produce going up, California cling peaches are an economical way to ensure you get great tasting ripe fruit every time. As a mom, I take comfort in knowing that the the canning process of peaches has been proven to increase key nutrients including Vitamin A, Vitamin C and folate.

While I enjoy California cling peaches on their own, I like that when they’re cooked, canned peaches maintain their shape and firmness better than fresh or frozen.

California canned cling peaches have no preservatives and are often packed in their own juice. I love using the juice itself to add to a mocktail or pour with other fruit juices into a popsicle mould for a great summer treat.

A great simple recipe is to add California cling peaches to a smoothie or to take the natural juices in which they are canned and mix that juice in with some ginger ale then pour the whole thing over ice.

According to a study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, canned peaches are higher in antioxidants and Vitamin A and are nearly four times higher in Vitamin C and 10 times higher in folate than fresh peaches.

My mouth is watering just thinking of the fresh, succulent taste of California cling peaches. How do you like your peaches?

  1. Peaches have always been one of my favorite fruits. It is sad that today it is rare to actually find a sweet, juicy, perfectly ripe peach. The ones that I usually can find at the grocery store are hard and have little to no flavor. I can only be sure of getting good peaches by buying them in a can. Canned peaches are not my favorite, but they are definitely better than hard, bland peaches!

  2. Omg, I love peaches just as is! They’re my favorite fruit! 🙂 I didn’t realize you could swap eggs and butter for peach puree. I’m totally trying that!! Thank you!

  3. I love peaches! They also remind me of summer and being outside with my friends. We would bring a blanket outside and have a little picnic in the grass. I also remember my grandma making peach cobbler. YUM!
